Bridge replacement could cost $122M

Stakeholders are leaning toward a 73-foot-high fixed bridge to replace the 55-year-old Belle Chasse Bridge. The preferred replacement could cost up to $122 million. At a meeting of the Regional Planning Commission on June 10, engineers stressed that the tunnel and bridge that serves as the main entry point and exit for Plaquemines Parish is nearing the end of its lifespan and needs to be replaced. The Belle Chasse Bridge (or “Judge Perez Bridge”, as it is sometimes known) is a critical evacuation route in the event of a major storm in the parish.
