After looming over the Mississippi River for almost 63 years, the Red Star Yeast building is set to be demolished this June, with plans to turn the newly available space into office and retail space. At the time of its construction, the Red Star building was the first yeast-producing plant in the South. Red Star Yeast chose the location for the region’s easy access to molasses, a key component in making yeast. The three-story, 500,0000 sq. ft. plant was valued at $1.5 million in 1951 (approximately $13.4 million when adjusted for inflation).
