Council Seeks Approval to Implement Raise from Civil Service

_e Plaquemines Parish Government (PPG) council, at their September 14 meeting, unanimously approved a resolution requesting that the Civil Service Board allow for a “special one-time merit increase and allow for a special one-time pay plan adjustment.” In other words, this resolution requests the civil service commission to approve an adjusted payplan and a raise for all classi_ed employees—those who work under civil service regulations.

Belle Chasse Defeats South Plaq. in Annual “Battle of the Boot”

Belle Chasse High School defeated parish rival South Plaquemines High School in their annual “Battle of the Boot” football game by a score of 20 to 6. _e highly anticipated matchup drew a crowd of over 2,300 people. Even though Belle Chasse High School has won 9 of the last 10 meetings between the schools, this is always a highly contested game; bringing the best out of both school’s eorts. _is year’s game was no dierent. South Plaq scored _rst on a one-yard run by quarterback Rod Parker to make the score 6-0, after a blocked extra point eort. _e team’s then traded possessions battling for _eld position, until Belle Chasse’s senior kicker Trey Furey converted a school record 42-yard _eld goal attempt to make the score 6-3, going into the half. After halftime the Cardinals came out with a determined intensity and complied a 6 play 75 yard drive that was capped by a 8 yard touchdown run from senior Jacob Black to push the Cardinals ahead 10-6.

School Board Votes on First Step in Superintendent Search

At the Monday, September 11 Plaquemines Parish School Board (PPSB) meeting, board members voted on the first step they must take in the process of selecting a new superintendent. Specifically, PPSB voted on an agenda item that decided whether the school board would proceed with search using an outside “talent search” agency or do the search “in house using legal counsel.”

Martinez and Carlton Meet on Field Miles from Home

Two born and raised Belle Chasse football players, Ty Martinez and Luke Carlton, competed against each other in a D3 Week 1 match-up 6as the Huntingdon Hawks took on the Berry Vikings at Valhalla stadium in Rome, Georgia. Both started their football career with Plaquemines Parish’s Recreation Department and later went on to Belle Chasse Middle School where they played together on defense. Martinez decided to stay local, playing inside and outside linebacker for Belle Chasse High School graduating in 2020 and going on to Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL to play outside linebacker.

Venture Global LNG Funds Free High-Speed Internet Access to South Plaquemines Community

Venture Global LNG has provided funding to the YMCA of Greater New Orleans to provide free high speed internet access to residents living in the southern part of Plaquemines Parish. _e access is available at the YMCA's community centers located in Buras and Port Sulphur. _e generous $79,000 donation from Venture Global LNG covers infrastructure improvements needed to provide wireless internet access in these two locations, as well as ongoing funding for service through the end of 2024.
