Much of the GNO Area finally got some much-needed rain over the Labor Day weekend, with up to six inches falling in some parts of the region. With us being down by over 20 inches this year compared to our normal rainfall, this good soak was just what the (plant) doctor ordered. We’re not out of the woods yet, with a summer of stress related to heat and drought, plants are in a weakened state and additional problems can come from lots of rainfall all at once. Fungal pressures have been relatively low all season, but with renewed moisture, this may be the opportunity needed for pathogens to impact plants. Weak plants are not as vigorous or able to protect themselves with natural defenses, so be vigilant about monitoring for lawn fungal problems, black spot on roses, citrus canker, root rot, and other common diseases we see in a typical wet year.

Despite the e_orts of the Plaquemines Parish Government (PPG) to provide safe, clean drinking water to southern Plaquemines communities in the wake of the salt-water intrusion event that began in May 2023, the parish water system continues to struggle. According to district 9 council member Mark “Hobbo” Cognevich, while PPG has been able to overcome the salt-water intrusion by having water from the Belle Chasse Water Station pumped all the way down the road, residents still su_er from low-water pressure and many are still forced to use solely bottled water.

Growing up, Kristin Nash of Belle Chasse attended the Louisiana Craw_sh Festival in Chalmette with her family annually. At age 20, she's currently the Miss Louisiana Craw_sh Festival Queen whose duties include traveling across the state and promoting the festival.
