“Historic Cypress Trees in Plaquemines” Topic of March 12 Historical Meeting

Most believe that little if any old growth (200 years or older) cypress remains in Louisiana. Harvey Stern, coordinator of the Louisiana Purchase Cypress Legacy, will provide evidence to the contrary, showing where ancient cypress can be found in all corners of the state, including Plaquemines Parish. He will demonstrate how the age of old cypress trees are estimated, how to protect them if you have some, and will have sample tree borings on hand for examination. The Louisiana Purchase Cypress Legacy was established 2003 to identify, landmark, and promote the stewardship of old growth cypress in Louisiana that was alive at the time of the Louisiana Purchase—“Alive in 1803.”
