C.A.R.E Center receives donation from PPSO
Plaquemines Parish Sheriff Jerry Turlich presents a check for $1,660 to Julie Olsen, executive director of Plaquemines Community C.A.R.E. Centers, Nov. 30 at the PPSO building. Turlich and the PPSO raised the money by collecting donations from more than 80 of the PPSO’s employees to raise awareness of domestic violence and breast cancer affecting men. In exchange for their donations, the men of the PPSO were allowed to participate in No Shave November, thus the beards on the normally clean shaven officers. The beards had to go by Dec. 1, but Turlich said the attention brought to men’s issues which are rarely discussed was worth the break in grooming protocol. “There are a lot of things that go unnoticed, especially in men’s health. There’s a lot of tension with domestic violence and breast cancer awareness. We just wanted to bring some attention to the male perspective,” said Turlich. Plaquemines C.A.R.E. Centers provides a long list of services including counseling, parenting education, substance abuse services, domestic violence services, child abuse services, sexual abuse services and much more.
