CARE Centers report 50 percent drop in Plaquemines Parish suicides
The Plaquemines Community CARE (Counseling, Assessment/Advocacy, Resources, Early Intervention) Centers team has been commended for coordinating and providing comprehensive services throughout Plaquemines Parish that have resulted in a reduction in the suicide rate from 2017 to 2018.
In a recent meeting, Sheriff Jerry Turlich and his Executive Team commended the CARE Center Team for directly impacting the reduction of suicides in Plaquemines Parish in 2018. According to PPSO Statistics, Plaquemines had eight suicides and 29 attempted suicides in 2017. Following the implementation of a comprehensive program provided by the CARE Center, four suicides and 18 attempts were recorded in 2018. The reduction in suicides occurred even though the number of Plaquemines residents with clinical suicidal ideations increased from 36 in 2017 to 45 in 2018, demonstrating that more residents with suicidal thoughts [DB1] are seeking CARE’s services.
