Notarial Archives Subject of Feb. 4 Historical Meeting
The Plaquemines Parish Historical Association will host a presentation by the New Orleans Notarial Archives, a part of the Land Records Division of the Clerk of Civil District Court’s Office, on February 4 at the American Legion Hall at 102 Hunt Street in Belle Chasse.
The Hon. Chelsea Richard Napoleon, Chief Deputy Alexandria Irvin, and Archivist Janine Smith will offer an overview and history of the Notarial Ar chives and the Clerk’s Office. This will include a sampling of images and documents relating to Plaquemines Parish and the process of creating a chain of titles for properties. The Notarial Archives has been tasked since 1867 with housing, preserving, and making accessible the notarial acts filed in Orleans Parish, with some provenance in other parishes. Records date back from the 1700s through the present day. The prima ry mission of the Notarial Archives is to inform the community and surrounding parishes of the hidden treasures that can be found within the archive.
Janine Smith is the archivist for the Land Record’s Division of the Clerk’s Office. She is a member of the Academy of Certified Archivists, the Louisiana Archives and Manuscripts Association, the Greater New Orleans Archivists, and the New Orleans Preservation Co alition. Smith previously worked with various digital projects relating to collections within the Louisiana Digital Library at institutions in the metro area. She earned her Masters of Library and Information Science and a Special Certificate in Archives and Special Collections from the University of Southern Mississippi. The presentation is free and the public is encouraged to attend. The program begins at 6:30 p.m.
