Plaquemines Historical Association April 2 speaker on Fort St. Philip mystery
Dr. Samantha Cavell, Assistant Professor in Military History at Southeastern Louisiana University will be the guest speaker at the Plaquemines Parish Historical Association at its April 2, meeting.
“Dr. Sam” will clear up a long-time mystery about the role of Fort St. Philip during the Battle of New Orleans. Some speculate that the British attacked at Chalmette to secure the area around English Turn for the English fleet to be able to sail up river to New Orleans. When the Americans at Fort St. Philip stopped the English fleet, this prevented the fleet from re-enforcing the British Army at Chalmette.
