Combative attitudes and high tensions marked the September 24 Plaquemines Port Harbor & Terminal District (PPHTD) meeting. Specifically, Executive Director of the Plaquemines Port Sandy Sanders and District 5 Port Commissioner Benny Rousselle engaged one another in heated discussion right as the 5 pm meeting began.
At the September 10 Plaquemines Parish Council Meeting, the council heard an update from Melissa Kennedy, the representative from HNTB Corporation responsible for analyzing and mapping flood risks in the parish. The maps created from her findings will be submitted to FEMA so parish residents’ insurance rates can be accurate and up to date with current flood hazards.
NAS-JRB Credit Union is offering a monthly $200 Teacher Grant from August 2020 and continuing through April 2021. All Plaquemines Parish teachers are eligible to apply for the grant to assist with their classroom needs. The process is simple, just a quick online application. The parish council, acting in their role as PPHTD, heard presentations from Sal Litrico of American Patriot Holdings (APH) and other port leaders on how the project could make the Plaquemines Port essential to not only the national economy but, ultimately, the international economy as well.
LLast week, Hurricane Sally threatened to crash right into Plaquemines Parish and all of southeastern Louisiana. That forecast held all the way up until Monday afternoon when it became clear that Sally was a storm with potentially devastating consequences for anything in its path. Fortunately for Plaquemines, the storm took a hard eastern turn, its western side barely tapping the parish at all. For such a low-lying, floodprone parish, this sudden turn came as yet another stroke of luck in this incredibly active 2020 Atlantic hurricane season.
District 5 council member Benny Rousselle reworded his resolution that would send the Plaquemines Port Harbor & Terminal District into a lawsuit against the Belle Chasse Bridge project. Instead of litigation, the resolution now allows Plaquemines Parish Council Attorney Dannie Garrett to represent the port authority in a new round of negotiations involving the Belle Chasse Bridge.
Attendees at the Plaquemines Port Harbor & Terminal District meeting last week heard presentations on how the planned development of a new container terminal could impact the Plaquemines Parish economy from Sal Litrio of American Patriot Holdings (APH) and other ports leaders invested in the project. Litrico outlined thecompetitive advantages of the project, highlighting how the construction of this container terminal would create a “new North-South trade lane.” This trade lane would connect the Plaquemines Parish economy to the Midwest port economies, the national economy and, ultimately, the global economy. Litrico believes such a development would give Plaquemines a massive economic boost.
Sheriff Gerald A. Turlich Jr. is honored and proud to announce the recipients of the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) Employees of the Quarter from April - June 2020 as well as the “Employees of the Year” from the 2019 – 2020 fiscal year. The quarterly award program recognizes an employee in an enforcement position and an administrative role along with a correctional employee at the Plaquemines Parish Detention Center (PPDC).
Plaquemines Parish will be hosting a Hurricane Laura Relief Drive, in partnership with Second Harvest, for those impacted by Hurricane Laura.
A Town Hall Meeting featuring all of the candidates for Plaquemines District Attorney has been rescheduled for Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Buras Auditorium. The meeting was originally scheduled to take place Aug. 25 but was rescheduled due to Hurricane Laura and Tropical Storm Marco. Due to distancing protocols, capacity for the meeting including audience, speakers and staff will be 50 people.
Venture Global has taken another step toward locking in its plans to build an $8 billion liquefied natural gas terminal in Plaquemines Parish, but some members of the Port Commission are skeptical that the recent development changes much.
The Plaquemines Parish School Board recently received a donation from Chevron Oronite Oak Point to support the distance learning program.
