LAFF out loud

South Plaquemines Elementary third grader Keyia Davis was recognized at the March 2 Plaquemines School Board meeting at Belle Chasse Middle School for finishing second in the Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals’ (LAFF) statewide poster contest. Ngoc Bang Tran from South Plaquemines High School was also recognized for finishing third in LAFF’s essay contest but was unable to attend the school board meeting. Both students received ribbons and cash prizes for their exceptional takes on the Plaquemines Parish Fair & Orange Festival. Keyia is pictured with SPE Principal Dr. Stacey-Ann Barrett, SPE art paraprofessional Rita Frelich, and Keyia’s grandmother Deadra Davis.

SPHS students to compete at Home and Garden Show

A quick Google search will show you that the return of Shop class is a real and growing phenomenon, now preparing students for professions ranging from carpentry and construction to engineering and architecture. Leaders of the Home Builders Association of Greater New Orleans (HBA- GNO) hope the group’s new Bayou Battle of the Build (BBB) competition will help encourage workforce development in construction trades. In BBB, teams from area high schools will plan and build a project, then present it for judging at the 2020 New Orleans Home & Garden Show, March 27-29 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

South Plaq. YMCA forms Leaders Club

The South Plaquemines YMCA has formed a Leaders Club (teens in seventh through 12th grade) in collaboration with South Plaquemines High School. Leaders Club is designed to provide knowledge, training and experiences so that teens become strong leaders in their community and foster a spirit of service to others. Leaders gain confidence, maturity and exposure for career and college readiness through club participation.

Family Gras 2020

On Sunday, Feb. 23, come on down and across to the Eastbank for the Annual “Plaquemines Parish Family Gras 2020.” This year, Family Gras will be the perfect getaway for your family. Everyone is invited throughout Plaquemines Parish and all surrounding parishes. There will be a parade along the traditional parade route (Hwy. 15 Pointe a la hache to Davant Park), over 30 food vendors (Gumbo, Boiled Crawfish, Shrimp Poboys, Oysters, BBQ, etc.), Live Entertainment by the “Just Right Band,” and most importantly, family and fun! Proceeds from this event will benefit Phoenix High School.

Andry announces resignation from Civil Service Commission

Plaquemines Civil Service Commissioner Gibby Andry only intended to serve one three-year term on the parish’s sounding board for employee grievances and policies. He provided a further public service at the commission’s Feb. 12 meeting by explaining that if a commissioner doesn’t formally submit his or her intention to step down, they’re automatically renewed for a second term.

South Plaquemines Elementary School hosted a spirit week on Sept. 8-11. While all of the days were a success, the favorite was dress like a superhero. The faculty and students came decked out in first responder uniforms (the most popular attire) to show their appreciation for so many who risked and continue to risk their lives to save others during the COVID-19 pandemic.
