BCHS teacher named CRCL 2020 Volunteer of the Year

Belle Chasse High School teacher and coach Casey McMann, pictured far right with his students in the Belle Chasse Coastal Restoration Club on site at a restoration project, has been announced as Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana’s 2020 Volunteer of the Year. A CRCL press release from last week lauded McMann among 13 Stewardship Award recipients who will be recognized at a gala event March 27 in Baton Rouge. A statement from McMann and the Belle Chasse Coastal Restoration Club thanks CRCL for the recognition and the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation for organizing wetland tree and grass plantings in Woodlands Conservancy in which BCCRC has participated. “Personally, I’d like to thank the students at BCHS who spend their time after school or on weekends participating in these projects, learning about our coast and its ecology and sharing their experiences with others. That is the heart of our mission,” said McMann. Student Michelle Flores-Acosta added “We planted marsh grass one-by-one and once we were done, seeing the overall progress was spectacular. It might be strenuous work at times, but the learning experience and knowing you’re making a difference pays off. And if you just have fun and make friends, it doesn’t feel like work.” Photo courtesy of Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana
