Thomas Popich, one-time owner of The Plaquemines Gazette, first-ever king of the Plaquemines Orange Festival, who, along with his brother Joe, was a pioneer in the marine transport business at the mouth of the Mississippi River, died April 12 at the age of 96.

Runners large and small participated in Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans’ inaugural Need for Speed 5K April 13. The big race and the children’s Fun Run included stretches on the base’s flight line.
