"Cormier Turner" signs promote unofficial advisory role
Parish President Amos Cormier III was unsuccessful in his bid to win a full term in office in the Dec. 8 runoff election against Parish Council member Kirk Lepine. But he already made (possible) history of another kind with an unusual campaign tactic.
Cormier put a novel spin on a tactic that propelled him to the presidency in a December 2016 special election runoff against Lepine. In that election, to replace the late Amos Cormier Jr. who died unexpectedly in June 2016, Cormier received the endorsement of third-place presidential candidate and former Parish Council member Burghart Turner. Cormier received 26 percent of the vote in the November 2016 election to Lepine’s 31 percent, with Turner receiving 22 percent. With the help of Turner’s Eastbank support, Cormier went on to win the December 2016 runoff with 57 percent of the vote.
This time, to make Turner’s endorsement crystal clear, Cormier’s campaign printed and posted new campaign signs declaring “Cormier Turner – A team we can believe in.”
