Croatian American Society to host Culture & Food Experience Feb. 23 in Jesuit Bend
The Croatian American Society in Plaquemines stays busy, but a recent confluence of upcoming events evolved beyond a simple monthly meeting into the Croatian American Culture & Food Experience.
The big event will take place Feb. 23 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 14042 Hwy 23 in Jesuit Bend. Attractions include a visiting Klapa group from Croatia who will sing, dance and cook, traditional Croatian food, drink and art provided by the thriving local Croatian American population, a brand-new bocce court and a 128-foot inflatable to keep the kids occupied.
Admission is free, but the traditional dishes, desserts and wine will be for sale.
Jane Tesvich, one of the Croatian American Society’s leaders and wife to its president, John Tesvich, said the ball started rolling with the Klapa group, which hails from an area of northern Croatia where many of Plaquemines’ Croatian American citizens trace their roots or still have family to this day. The 10-man band of cultural ambassadors will sing and play traditional music in addition to cooking up dishes like frog legs, eel and tripe. Local CAS members and families will also set up booths representing their villages, towns and regions, complete with traditional food and drinks.
