Inmate steals race car, fails to escape
A Plaquemines Parish inmate walked out of a courthouse May 21, hopped in a race car and drove away and still couldn’t escape the parish.
Herman Turlich, 42, of Gretna, was at the courthouse on Main Street in Belle Chasse to face simple burglary charges when he somehow slipped out of a back door undetected. Once on Main Street, he broke into a warehouse just down the street where he stumbled upon the race car. The off-road racer is built for dirt or gravel race tracks and does not require a key to start. However, the owner of the warehouse said the car does have a series of switches which must be in the correct position for the engine to start. The owner estimates Turlich was probably in the warehouse for an hour before starting the car and driving straight through a 12-foot roll-up door and through the property’s chain link gate onto Main Street.
