Lepine defeats Cormier in tight presidential election
By a scant 336 votes, Kirk Lepine is the president elect of Plaquemines Parish.
Lepine, the current District 3 Parish Council member, finished with 3,625 votes to current Parish President Amos Cormier III’s 3,289 in the Dec. 8 runoff election. As expected, Cormier dominated the Eastbank vote and most of the precincts in the southern end of the parish, but Lepine easily took the northern end and Belle Chasse votes.
Early voting tipped in Lepine’s favor 2,265 to 1,212.
“We were up high on early votes, then the rain (Dec. 8) was tough. I think it slowed voters from coming out,” said Lepine Dec. 9. “We won, but not as big as we thought we would.”
He said the moment the finals were confirmed was a validating moment.
