Mitch Jurisich has been named the new Plaquemines Parish Orange King. The third-generation oyster fisherman was nominated by 17 previous kings at an annual dinner. He will take over from Plaquemines Gazette publisher Norris Babin. “Cardinals use the Sistine Chapel, Plaquemines Parish uses the Beef Connection,” joked Danica Ansardi at a function to reveal the new king on August 12. “And we all wait around for that white smoke to appear.” According to Judge Michael Kirby, Jurisich was chosen to represent the Parish as Orange King to help shine a light on the troubles faced by
the oyster industry as a whole. Jurisich – a lifelong Empire resident - has represented the oyster industry in several different capacities and currently serves as the representative of the industry for the Save Louisiana Coalition.
