The Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Belle Chasse, home to almost all the U.S. military branches, survived the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) review. The military has since invested in the base, building a commissary, and will soon start resurfacing its runway, with a 2,000 foot extension. Of course 2005 was a landmark year for Plaquemines Parish. Belle Chasse was the one lucky town in the parish to escape major Hurricane Katrina damage, and the population boomed.
