NAS-JRB planning Need for Speed 5K
A swift, steady pace is the key to most 5K runs, but runners may be tempted to take off down the runway at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans’ Need for Speed Runway 5K on April 13.
The exact route is still being worked out, but runners should sign up if they want the chance to sprint, or lightly jog, down the flight line at NAS-JRB. The Navy base in Belle Chasse is holding the inaugural 5K as a community event in lieu of an air show, which is expected to return in 2020.
“We thought it would be a pretty unique thing to let people run on the actual runway,” said Andrew Thomas, public affairs officer at NAS-JRB. “It’s our intention to make this an annual event.”
The Need for Speed 5K will also feature a Kids’ Dash fun run, static aircraft displays, food, beverages, music and vendors. The general public is invited to attend even if they choose not to run.
“We just wanted to give a heads-up to all the runners in the area to save the date,” Capt. Tony Scarpino, NAS-JRB commanding officer, said. “We think it offers a unique opportunity, and allows us to invite the community onto the base.”
