Plaquemines Parish Special Olympics
The was held on Friday, March 22, at South Plaquemines High School in Buras. There were 300+ student athletes from ten schools in the parish that were invited to attend. Participating schools included: Belle Chasse Academy, Belle Chasse Primary, Belle Chasse Elementary, Belle Chasse Middle, Belle Chasse High, Boothville-Venice Elementary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Phoenix High, South Plaquemines Elementary, and South Plaquemines High. Athletes were given the opportunity to participate in three events; running (10, 25, 50, 100 meter walk/dash), jumping (standing/running long jump), and throwing (tennis ball, softball, shotput). The SPHS BETA Club and Cheerleaders along with the BCHS BETA Club, Cheerleaders, baseball team, and Cardinal Buddies participated in the games by assisting with the events and cheering on the athletes. Employees from Chevron, Rehab Access, Plaquemines Parish Government, and other members of the community volunteered their time by assisting athletes and running events. Plaquemines Parish Medical Center and Sheriff Gerald A. Turlich Jr. with his deputies were in attendance to participate in the opening ceremonies as well as to provide lunch for all of the athletes and volunteers. The event was a huge success because of the tremendous support given by the volunteers and sponsors in our community.
