Port, Council discusses changes to boat harbors and marinas

By Kari Dequine Harden

As the parish looks to consolidate departments and increase efficiency, one idea put forth during recent presidential candidate forums was to put boat harbors and marinas under the Plaquemines Parish Port Harbor and Terminal District (Port). Deputy Port Director John Pennison said the harbors and marinas are outside of the port’s purview, at the Port Committee meeting last week. Boat harbors and marinas support fishing and recreation, and the Port “deals with interstate and foreign commerce,” he said. In addition, Pennison said the Port can’t charge tariffs in boat harbors, and would not be able to use the fees they collect to subsidize the harbors and marinas.
