Port of NOLA and Port of Plaq. Compete for Container Terminal
The Port of New Orleans signed an agreement to buy the Violet Dock from the Port of St. Bernard in order to build a $1.5 billion multimodal container terminal in Violet, Louisiana on December 29, 2020, putting the international port in direct competition with the Port of Plaquemines’ container terminal project.
Similar to the Plaquemines project, a container terminal at the Violet Dock would allow the Port of NOLA to accommodate the largest container vessels in the Gulf of Mexico and— utilizing the location’s access to both the Mississippi River and 6 Class 1 railroads and interstate highways—transport their cargo throughout the United States.
According to Chief of Staff and Vice President of Public Affairs for the Port of NOLA Michelle Ganon, “there’s only going to be one [container terminal] in [southeast Louisiana], there isn’t a need for two terminals.”
