PPG Hosts "Town Halls" for Millages, Flood Maps

The Plaquemines Parish Government held informative public “Town Hall Meetings” in regards to the 5 property millages on the December 5 ballot and the new FEMA flood insurance rate maps that will be adopted on January 15, 2021.

Three “Town Halls” occurred in November throughout Plaquemines: one was held on November 16 at the Davant Community Center, another on November 17 at the Buras Auditorium, and the final one on November 18 at the Belle Chasse Auditorium.

Melissa Kennedy, the representative from HNTB Corporation responsible for analyzing and mapping flood risk in the parish, gave a presentation on how these new flood maps will affect residents. According to Kennedy, residents could either see their flood risk increase, decrease, or stay the same. If residents’ risk decreases, then their insurance rates could decrease along with it, but if their risk increases, they will have to pay more for insurance. No change in risk means residents' insurance rates should remain the same as well.
