Researcher Sheds New Light On Frank’s Island Fiasco

By Alex Galbraith

One of the grandest failures in the history of Plaquemines Parish may not of have happened the way that it is taught in the history books. Researcher Jay Reidl was invited to share his new theories on the collapse of the Frank’s Island lighthouse during this month’s meeting of the Plaquemines Historical Association on January 6. The Frank’s Island lighthouse was meant to be a gleaming monument to the glory of the United States, telling all ships who entered the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico that this land belonged to a great and mighty nation. The idea for the lighthouse was pitched by President Thomas Jefferson, designed by the “Father of American Architecture” Benjamin LaTrobe and built right here in Plaquemines Parish.
