Rig Explosion off Plaquemines Coast Kills 1

By Alex Galbraith
An Abbeville man was killed and three more men were injured in an explosion on an oil rig 12 miles off of the coast of Plaquemines Parish on November 20. The Jefferson Parish coroner identified the deceased as Jerrell Hancock, a 24-yearold working with an industrial cleaning contractor Turnkey Cleaning Services. In a parish that is still feeling the after-effects of the BP oil spill, news of a rig explosion caused many parish officials and residents to hold their breath. However, the rig was not in operation at the time of the explosion and a fly-over by the Coast Guard confirmed that no pollutants had spilled into the Gulf of Mexico.
