During the October meeting of the Plaquemines Association of Business and Industry, Plaquemines Port Executive Director Gen. Maynard “Sandy” Sanders revealed his vision for the proposed port facilities. Sanders says he wants Plaquemines Port to be an “Intermodal gateway to mid-America,” offloading cargo destined for states like Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois by truck and rail. The ease with which Plaquemines Port can ship to Chicago is of particular importance, as the city serves as a hub for freight. Sanders spoke of “building a better mousetrap” to take advantage of several occurrences in the world of maritime shipping, not the least of which is the deepening and widening of Panama Canal.
