Crape Myrtle Bark Scale: A Sticky Situation

Body
Crape myrtles have become a beautiful part of our summer landscaping since it was first introduced to the US in the late 1700’s in Charleston, South Carolina. They are native to China and Korea and have been enjoyed as a landscape tree for centuries there. Historically, crape myrtles have had few pest and disease issues in Louisiana, making them a favorite for municipalities and homeowners looking to add summer blooms to the area. In 2004, a pest called Crape Myrtle Bark Scale, or Eriococcus lagerstroemia, (CMBS for short) was detected on trees in the Houston area. By 2016, CMBS had spread to eleven states, and it is currently still expanding its range. This tiny scale insect comes from the area where crape myrtles are native to in eastern Asia. It is closely related to the azalea scale and was initially misidentified as this pest.
