Insurance Reform Falls Flat

Body
Remember your ancient history of how Nero fiddled as Rome burned? Boy does that apply to the Louisiana legislature. Now we are talking about the state that has far and away the highest insurance rates in the nation. Yet in the recent legislative session, insurance reforms were all but ignored. Political columnist Clancy Dubos said it best when he wrote about the winners and the losers. Insurance companies were the big winners and Louisiana policyholders were hands down the big losers.

Thoughts from the Publisher

Body
Some taxes are assessed and collected in the United States based on the honor system. There are agencies at every level with the responsibility and authority to audit, fine and even prosecute individuals and companies who are dishonest in their reporting. But much reporting is based on good faith. Sort of a checks and balances approach.

Mississippi River Diversions

Body
I was born and raised in Buras, Louisiana, 60 miles south of Gretna, Louisiana. My father and grandfather were oyster cultivators from 1910 to the 1950s. Their working camp was located on Mitchell Cut in the Buras bays area. Their oyster leases were in Mitchell Cut and bays Jack, Skip Jack, Cyprian, Coquette, Dry Cypress Bayou and Scofield Bay. They dredged and transferred seed oysters from the state reefs in the Black Bay area on the east bank. The seed oysters were planted on their leases and harvested when they matured.

Looking for a Good Street Tree?

Body
When asked to recommend a street tree for the New Orleans area that “plays nice” with power lines, I usually have three that come to mind. Crepe myrtles and vitex are both showy bloomers and easily grow in the “hell strip” between the curb and sidewalk. Increasingly though, folks are requesting Louisiana native species that support pollinators and other wildlife while also helping with stormwater management in small, urban and suburban yards. The evergreen sweetbay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana var. australis) fits the bill. It is a hardy, medium sized native tree reaching a height of 50’ and a width of 30’ at maturity. It can be grown as a single trunk specimen or a multitrunk tree. It has an open, spacious branching habit, making it easy to shape to avoid damaging power lines. The leaves are glossy and evergreen with a silver backing, and it produces creamy white flowers (think miniature versions of the large Southern magnolia blooms). The conelike seed pods have bright red seeds that create further visual interest.
