Excellence Shines Bright in Plaquemines Parish Schools

On January 10, the Plaquemines Parish School Board honored the winners of the district’s Students of the Year, Teachers of the Year, and Principal of the Year for the 2021-2022 school year. Each winner was presented with a trophy or plaque at its monthly meeting.

Completion of Four Oyster Broodstock Reefs in Plaquemines and St. Bernard

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has completed construction of four reefs located at Petit Pass, Karako Bay, Lake Machias, and Mozambique Point in Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes. Approximately 5,000 cubic yards of limestone was placed within each 10- acre site for a total of about 20,000 cubic yards of new oyster reef. During material deposition, emphasis was placed on creating off-bottom relief.

PPG Holds Public Input Sessions on Redistricting

With fall 2022 elections that will see the Plaquemines Parish presidency, nine council seats and nine school board seats up for grabs, PPG is moving through the redistricting process. As part of that process, however, the parish government set up “Public Input Sessions” throughout the parish so residents could be informed on how redistricting works and what federal and state regulations must be followed. Additionally, those “Public Input Sessions” also told residents how they could comment on the draft district maps.

PPHTD Commissioners Hear Presentations on Railway Extension, Container Terminal Projects

The first Plaquemines Port Harbor & Terminal District meeting of the 2022 calendar year was held on January 13, and though no major updates on the progression of any developments around the parish were announced at the meeting, commissioners did get to hear presentations from multiple parties involved in the development of the proposed railway extension and container terminal projects.

Unrestrained Driver Killed in Plaquemines Parish Crash

On January 1, just after 2 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a two vehicle crash on Highway 23 near Windmill Lane in Belle Chasse. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 28-year-old Anara J. Miller of Port Sulphur.
