POINT OF VIEW

Body
In 1940 John F. Kennedy was a college student composing his thesis. He chose as a topic the situation of re-armament in Great Britain at the opening of World War II. The title of this work is: “Why England Slept” which was a follow-up to Winston Churchill’s “While England Slept.” Both focus on the failure of Great Britain to recognize and respond to the threat of a revitalized and powerful Germany under Adolph Hitler.

Propagate Figs This Winter

Body
Figs are one of the most bomb-proof fruits we can grow and enjoy in our area. They are a real plant it and forget about it tree, with few pest and disease issues that require fussing over. I’ve seen fig boring beetles, termites, and fig rust a plenty, but nine times out of ten the tree will recover and live on to make a good crop. Figs go dormant or mostly dormant in our area around mid-December, dropping all of their leaves until spring. While the majority of your pruning should be done in mid or late February to keep the shape of the fig tree manageable and promote a heavier crop, December is an excellent time to make some cuttings and propagate some new fig trees of your own.
