During the final days of the 2023 legislative session, the Louisiana state legislature passed two bills (Senate Bill 74 and Senate Bill 214) that have major implications for the future development of both the state port system and the Plaquemines Parish port. Upon first hearing of these bills early in the legislative session, Plaquemines Port Harbor & Terminal District (PPHTD) commissioners were concerned that these bills would negatively impact the port’s autonomy and development. While, in statements to the Plaquemines Gazette, a few of the port officials have come around to take a more optimistic view of these two senate bills, there are those who still hold those same concerns.

We are used to hearing legislators in Washington call each other liars. Just a few months ago during the President’s State of the Union speech, Congressman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia jabbed a thumbs down in the president’s direction and yelled “liar” after his comments._ “Joe Biden_ is lying to the American People,” Greene_ tweeted during the speech.

Where would we be without businesses in our parish to supply jobs, services and tax bases? We need more businesses to relocate into Plaquemines Parish. But it has to be the right kind of business.
