Paul Minos Sonnier
Paul Minos Sonnier passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at his residence in Mississippi with his family at his side at the age of 92. He was born January 13, 1926 in Delcambre to the late Orgar and Ida Broussard Sonnier, and was the fifth of ten children. Paul was a patriot of his beloved country, proudly serving in the Navy during World War II. He served aboard the USS LCI (G) 458 and was found worthy of membership in The Ancient and Sacred Order of the Golden Dragon, as well as the Solemn Mysteries of the Ancient Order of the Deep. He received two battle stars as well as a Presidential Unit Citation and was Honorable Discharged from his duties May 21, 1946. After his military service Paul worked for Freeport Sulphur Company in Port Sulphur and later became a tugboat captain until his retirement. Those days of his retirement were spent doing the things he loved best, spending time with family and friends and enjoying life. He will be remembered for his kind words and inviting smile and for treating everyone as a friend. He leaves a legacy of love that will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Ida Sonnier, Donald J. Sonnier (Cathy), Annette Gardemal (John), Patrick M. Sonnier (Kimberly), Joni Sonnier (Stephen); his daughter-in-law, Zyra Sonnier; 15 grandchildren, Haley Spahr, Jamie Hebert, Zyra Randolph, Trisha Guyon, Charlotte Lee, Jessica Prather, Jeremy Sonnier, Brooke Millien, Brock Sonnier, Bryce Sonnier, Brenda Owen, Samantha Owen, Jodi Sonnier, Brett Sonnier; numerous great grandchildren; and his brother, Irving J. Sonnier. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Ralph Sonnier; his grandson, Patrick Sonnier, Jr.; and his brothers and sisters, Ed Wilfred Sonnier, Edgar “Bee” Sonnier, Thelma “Sis” Delahoussaye, Loveless “Love” Saunier, Percy Sonnier, Edia Dubois Geoffroy, Ophelia Schexnayder and Elma “Noon” Crawford. Members of the family served as pallbearers. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Paul Minos Sonnier was held on Saturday, August 18 2018 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Fr. Buddy Breaux was the celebrant. Mr. Sonnier was laid to rest following the Mass at Our Lady of the Lake Mausoleum. Military honors was also rendered by the United States Navy. A rosary was said for Paul, and a gathering of family and friends followed afterward.
