Plaquemines Port Identi_es Costs and Needs for Ferry System

e Plaquemines Parish Port Harbor & Terminal District (PPHTD) administration and executive director Charles Tillotson have identi_ed a plan to address the currently shut down Pointe a la Hache (PALH) Ferry ramps and how much that plan will cost. According to comments made by Tillotson at public town hall meetings and the June 22 PPHTD meeting, the port plans on fully restoring and running a two ferry system just like before.

Council Discusses Salt Water Intrusion Event at Latest Meeting

It was announced at the June 22 Plaquemines Parish council meeting that president Keith Hinkley has declared a state of emergency in the parish due to another “salt water wedge” moving up the Mississippi River into the parish drinking water. Hinkley was not present at the council meeting to address this issue, so lead Plaquemines Parish Government attorney Rennie Buras provided an update on it instead.

Special Olympics Athletes Make Plaquemines Proud at State Games

In May, the Plaquemines Parish Special Olympics school-based and community- based athletes competed in the State Summer Games at Southeastern Louisiana University for the _rst three-day event since 2019. e weekend kicked o 3at Strawberry Stadium for opening ceremonies where the athletes were entertained, welcomed, and celebrated before the weekend of competition. roughout the weekend, each school-based athlete competed in a 25m, 50m, or 100-meter run, standing or running long jump, and a softball throw. Plaquemines Parish was represented by 18 determined athletes from Boothville-Venice Elementary School, South Plaquemines High School, Belle Chasse Middle School, Belle Chasse High School, Belle Chasse Elementary School, and Belle Chasse Academy.

Port Enters Amended SP Contract Without Public Review

Plaquemines Port Harbor & Terminal District (PPHTD) commissioners officially reinstated the amended Sustainability Partners (SP) contract to fund the railway extension project intended to service the planned container terminal at the June 22 meeting. This contract has been the subject of major controversy for the port for years at this point—being a contributing factor to splits that formed amongst commissioners, the releasing of former executive director Sandy Sanders, and the focus of a lawsuit filed by PPHTD against SP.
