Summer heat can be brutal in our area, but the gardens and landscaping around our homes still need some care and monitoring in the challenging summer months. Plants need to be watered, weeds grow seemingly overnight, and pests can pop up unannounced. Gardeners also need to take care of themselves when tending the plants in the summer heat. Heat stroke, dehydration, and sunburn are all afflictions that can make gardening a less than pleasant chore in the summertime. With some smart strategies, these unpleasant things don’t have to happen.

The Plaquemines Association of Business & Industry (PABI) held the annual “State of the Parish Address” at its May 18 luncheon, and parish president Kirk Lepine gave a presentation to local business leaders, council members, and other parish leaders on the many “challenges” Plaquemines has been confronted with and how his administration had worked to overcome those “challenges.”

The Plaquemines Parish Government (PPG) is currently facing a lawsuit for, allegedly, refusing to pay a contractor for work performed during the Hurricane Ida recovery effort. Specifically, PPG is being sued by the company Clean Tank Solutions LLC (CTS) and its owner Greg Gibson.

Businessman and former Plaquemines Parish Councilman Keith Hinkley announced today his decision to run for Parish President of Plaquemines this fall. Noting that Plaquemines Parish under the current administrator is “stuck in idle,” Hinkley expressed frustration with the parish’s lack of progress as he unveiled his own list of goals and objectives.

Dream Teachers is a statewide, non-profit organization dedicated to recognizing and rewarding exceptional educators throughout the state of Louisiana and raising public awareness of the true value of the teaching profession. Dalon Bienemy, Plaquemines Parish Public School Teacher of the Year and currently one of the semi-finalists for Louisiana State Teacher of the Year for 2022, has recently been recognized as a highly qualified teacher of excellence by Dream Teachers. On May 9, 2022, a criminal jury trial was started in Plaquemines Parish before the Honorable Judge Michael D. Clement. Assistant District Attorney Jason Napoli presented a case against defendant, Mark Magee of Belle Chasse, age 68 years, for Sexual Battery and Cruelty to a Juvenile.

Sheriff Gerald A. Turlich, Jr. announces the arrest of Robert Kelly, 43, and Angela Goodfellow, 43, of Slidell, Louisiana in connection to the Simple Burglary of the residence of Louisiana Lieutenant Governor, Billy Nungesser. Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) issued arrest warrants for Kelly and Goodfellow on one count of Simple Burglary and one count of Simple Arson each. Subsequently, the couple were apprehended in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
