Sullivan Crawford Bentley entered into eternal rest on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at his home in Phoenix, LA, at the age of 82. Sullivan "Crawford" as he was commonly known, was born on June 14, 1939, in Phoenix, LA, to the late Joseph Bentley Sr. and Velma Turner Bentley. He was a lifelong resident of Phoenix. Sullivan was united in Holy Matrimony to Emelda Cosse' Bentley, on December 11, 1960, and was a loving and faithful husband to Emelda for 60 years until her passing in October of 2020. The union of Sullivan and Emelda was blessed with six children: Yvette Griffin (James), Lori Bentley, Cleatris Bentley (Detrece), Orin Bentley, Clarissa Bentley and Treshiki Bentley-Giles (Corey). Sullivan was a graduate of Phoenix High School, Class of 1957. He was baptized at St. John Baptist Church by the late Rev. Percy M. Griffin and was a dedicated member and Master Doorkeeper/Usher until his passing. He was also the proud grandfather of 10: Travon, Kia, Cayman, Candis, Cameia, Jawan, Laken, Kiarra, Kenny Jr., and Jaylon. Great-grandfather of nine: Treyon, Madison, Gerard Jr., Talia, Rashad, Kendrick Jr., Lyric, Ky'Lee and Ahmir. Beloved brother of Curtis Bentley, Verna B. Mahoney, Rose Demolle, the late Joseph Bentley Jr., Ulysses Bentley Sr., and Joycelyn B. Griffin. Brother-in-law of 10. Also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. "Crawford" worked as a freight handler on the New Orleans Riverfront (Longshoreman Local 854) for over 31 years until his retirement at the age of 55. He was a long-time member of the Pointe-a-la-Hache Volunteer Fire Department. After retiring as a Longshoreman, Sullivan dedicated his time to the community as the "Ice Cream Man" to the Eastbank of Plaquemines Parish until 2019. Through his many affiliations, "Crawford" was well known and touched many lives, hearts and souls. Relatives and friends, neighboring churches of Plaquemines, St. Bernard, Jefferson, Orleans and East Baton Rouge Parishes, Pointe-a-la-Hache Volunteer Fire Department, International Longshoremen Association (Local 854), Phoenix High School Class of 1957, Plaquemines Parish Government, Plaquemines Parish School Board, Host Terminals Davant, and Dialysis Clinic Inc. were invited to attend the service. Visitation and a homegoing celebration honoring the life and legacy of the late Mr. Sullivan Crawford Bentley was held at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Phoenix, LA, on Saturday, October 23, 2021.
