Kathleen Elizabeth Calhoun Nettleton, publisher, philanthropist, committed Christian, and lifelong resident of New Orleans, was born June 26, 1958, in Fargo, ND, and died September 1, 2021, in Katy, TX, after evacuating from Hurricane Ida. Kathleen grew up in Buras, LA, and the West Bank of New Orleans. She was active in Oak Park Baptist Church with her family from an early age. Kathleen attended O. Perry Walker High School, graduating in 1976. She attended Louisiana State University, where she was active in the Baptist Student Union and First Baptist Church, Baton Rouge. She graduated with a business degree in 1982.After graduation, Kathleen began work at her dream job, Pelican Publishing Company, the New Orleans publisher bought and revived by her parents in the mid-1960s. Kathleen was married to Carl Joseph Nettleton August 5, 1995. Carl and Kathleen blended their lives with shared love for live music concerts, great New Orleans food, extended family gatherings, work together at Pelican, and their deep commitment to Christ through their church, Oak Park Baptist. After gaining years of experience and knowledge about Pelican Publishing, Kathleen assumed the reins of the company as publisher in 2012. Later that year, in recognition of her role in the New Orleans business and philanthropic community, Kathleen was named a Top Female Achiever by New Orleans Magazine. Kathleen also served as a trustee of Baptist Community Ministries of New Orleans. Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, Milburn Calhoun and Nancy Calhoun, her husband, Carl Nettleton, her aunt Faye Watson of Douglasville, GA, and uncle James Calhoun of Baton Rouge, LA. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, David and Sharon Calhoun of Spokane, WA, niece and nephew-in-law Susan and Julian Calhoun of Washington DC, niece Leslie Calhoun of Colorado Springs, CO, niece and nephew-in-law Sophia Calhoun and Adam Calhoun of Spokane, WA, niece Heather Calhoun of Spokane, WA, and aunt Gloria Calhoun Lee of Calhoun, LA.A memorial service and reception for Kathleen was held on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at the Leavell Chapel of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 3939 Gentilly Blvd., New Orleans, LA.
