The Plaquemines Gazette, a small-town newspaper in Southeast Louisiana, keeps surviving as others have collapsed. The current owners of the Gazette are managing to cover news in Plaquemines Parish and produce a physical newspaper at a time when “digital content” is king. Profitable years are rare, as are high paying salaries. So, how does The Plaquemines Gazette continue to operate? Veteran New Orleans journalist Thanh Truong recently visited the paper’s offices in Belle Chasse to find out.
Truong recently had a conversation with the Gazette’s staff members about the survival of printed newspapers. The staff isn’t worried about likes, shares, downloads or even money. It’s a reminder of what journalism should be about.
