Glenn Gerald Swift, 78, Smithville, Arkansas and formerly a longtime resident of Plaquemines Parish, departed this life on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at the VA Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born on July 26, 1948, in Hammond, Indiana, to the late George William and Elizabeth (Billingsley) Swift. After graduating from Calumet High School in Indiana in 1967, Glenn attended Southern Baptist College before proudly serving his country in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he earned his degree from Arkansas State University. Though well educated, Glenn was a fisherman and carpenter at heart. Whether fishing the Mississippi River, building with his hands, or traveling, he was a lifelong learner, equally at home with books or tools. He and his beloved wife, Debbie, made their home for many years in Port Sulphur, Louisiana, where Glenn became a familiar face in the community. After Debbie’s passing, Glenn returned to Buras, where he enjoyed being close to friends and family before moving back to Arkansas as his health declined. He never truly retired from fishing because, as those who knew him best would say, “once a fisherman, always a fisherman.” His son, Jonathan, described him best: “He was a teacher of children, a spokesman for those who had no voice, and always gave a helping hand to those in need.” Glenn’s independent spirit, generous heart, and unwavering love for his family and friends will be deeply missed. Glenn was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Debbie Swift; his parents, George William and Elizabeth Swift; and his brother-in-law, Tillman Walker. He is survived by his son, Jonathan (Amy) Swift; his brother, Harlind (Mae) Swift; his sisters, Phyllis Walker and Carolyn (Tony) Hudson; his granddaughters, Jazmine Swift, Shelby Swift, and Exa Connor; three great-granddaughters; seven nieces; three nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and many dear friends whom Glenn considered family. He will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 7, 2026, from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at First Free Will Baptist Church, 301 NW 7th Street, Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. A memorial service will immediately follow at 11:00 A.M. with Bro. Terry Spradlin officiating. There will be no burial at this time.
