Residents Express Frustration with Water Quality at Council Meeting

Poor water quality and water pressure continue to be major issues for many residents throughout Plaquemines Parish, with numerous boil water advisories/ water outages being issued by the parish government in the past few weeks (particularly in communities just north of the bridge like Fort St. Leon). While parish officials have made water quality, water pressure, and the improvement of the water system generally priorities in recent years, residents gathered at the March 14 council meeting to express their concern and frustration with the current state of the water system.

Tulane PhD Student Seeks to Understand How Environmental Issues Impact Plaquemines

Tulane University PhD student Marlene Friis has been spending the past few months of her life in Plaquemines Parish to collect research for her dissertation—a study and essay doctoral students are required to write to receive their PHD. This study is specifically aimed at analyzing the older generations in lower Plaquemines and how various environmental, economic, social, and political factors have changed the community over the years.

Completion of Belle Chasse Toll Bridge Construction Pushed Back to May

The initial date for when the new Belle Chasse Toll Bridge being built by Plenary Group was expected to be complete, and tolls implemented, was April 2024. That month is fast approaching. Yet, Plaquemines Parish residents who have driven by the bridge may have noticed that though the project is taking shape, it doesn’t appear the bridge will be completed by April. In an interview, public information officer with Franklin Associates (the company hired by Plenary to handle public relations for the project) Abbe Ginn stated that the completion date for the bridge’s construction has been pushed back to May 2024.

It’s a Wrap! The Louisiana Legislature actually saved us a few bucks by finishing up their Special Session several days early. Some of the major measures passing both houses and expecting Governor Jeff Landry’s signature are Concealed Carrying of Firearms Without a Permit, Expanding the Methods used to Administer the Death Penalty, Increasing Penalties for Carjacking and Distribution of Fentanyl, Expanding Drug Courts, Changing the Age of Juvenile Offenders, and Restrictions to Parole and Probation.
