Martha Tyson Stella, age 94, passed away on April 25, 2025, in Metairie, Louisiana, after a recent hospital stay. She was born on December 13, 1930, in Orange, Texas; when she was very young, the family moved to Port Sulphur, LA. Martha is predeceased by her parents, Barty Joseph and Emma Gagnaux Tyson; her husband, Mitchell D. Stella; her siblings, Ola Mae Tyson, Myrtie Tyson Champagne, and Wayne Tyson, also son-in-law, Hillary P. Lincoln. Martha is survived by her two children, Tricia Stella Lincoln and Carlo M. Stella, as well as grandchildren: Alana Lincoln Chester (Matt), Mitchell D. Stella (Ashley), Treva Lincoln (fiancé, Johnathan Durr), Nicholas P. Lincoln and Carlyn Stella Hardy. She was a proud great-grandmother of Jackson Donald, William Lincoln, & Lucy Ann Chester; and Wilson Carlo & Carter Maria Stella; and upcoming newest addition, Levi Hardy who is due June 1st. Martha lived in Port Sulphur for 70 years. When she was young, she worked as a nurse’s aide, then became a homemaker and room mom. Later in life she worked at Sig’s Restaurant and Dr. Woessner’s office. After Hurricane Katrina devastated the area, she was forced to leave Plaquemines Parish. Forever, Port Sulphur was home and for many years she longed for the life she missed. She hoped to return to the house where she and Mitchell, who were married for 47 years, raised their children on Udstad Lane. She missed everything about life in Port Sulphur--her family living close by, shopping for groceries at Fremin’s IGA, and attending mass at St. Patrick’s Church, the Davises from the Shell Station who helped her with many little problems that came up, and being surrounded by the kindest neighbors. Martha moved to Metairie and lived next door to daughter, Tricia, for 24 years. One year ago, she moved down the block to an assisted living home. She now had the companionship of the other residents, in addition to the love and care of the staff who took excellent care of her. They even introduced her to new foods which she loved. They played her favorite songs so she could sing and shuffle her feet to the beat. This January, they helped her peek outside to see the snowfall, and let her throw snowballs at them, all of which she so enjoyed. It was a happy year at Henican House. Thank you to those who helped her navigate this final stage of her life. A special thank you to dear family friend, Ova Barrere, who for years cared for Martha like another daughter. Ova’s care and friendship with Martha was exceptional. Ova told us many times that “Miss Martha” was very well known at her favorite stores, Zuppardo’s Family Market and the Dollar General where she was made to feel special every time she arrived. Also, thank you during this last year, to Milagros “Mimi” Calix and all the staff of Henican House who welcomed Martha as their first resident. Martha was called “the queen” and was treated like one since the day she moved in. Thank you also to Katrina Copper, Jackie Trotter & Genell Thomas who stepped in immediately when she needed additional care. Thank you to Dr. Alan Yager, Arlene and Sabrina for many years of caring for Martha.
