Harriet Sanders Thomas, died peacefully on November 25, 2024, while under Houston Hospice care at St. Dominic Village Nursing Home in Houston, Texas. Members of her family surrounded her. Harriet was born in Rushville, Louisiana on May 6, 1928, to the late Paul Sanders and Isabel Sullen. She lived in Algiers, LA for most of her life until she moved with her husband of 70 years, the late Willie, to Houston in 2014. She taught elementary school for 25 years at Scottville High School in Plaquemines Parish. She loved cooking and taking care of her children and grandchildren; she welcomed everybody to her home. Nobody left her house hungry. She loved casinos, bingo, and traveling with her husband, Willie. They traveled to Puerto Rico, The Bahamas, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Houston, California, Mississippi, and Tennessee. She leaves to mourn her death, her children–Althea Thomas Parker (Milton), Sandra Thomas Glass (Vincent), Byron Thomas (Robin), and Toni Simms (Gregory); bonus sisters–Geraldine Ricard and Shirley White; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband–Willie Thomas Jr.; parents– Paul Sanders and Isabel Sullen; sisters–Nancy, and Maxine; bonus sister–Maridel Moffett; and brothers– John, Joseph, Caesar, Pierre, Goeasy, Jules, Earl, Milton, and Ernest. She was number eleven of twelve siblings and was the last living member of the Sanders siblings. Relatives and friends of the family attended the funeral services on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at All Saints Catholic Church, 1441 Teche Street, New Orleans, LA. The Interment followed at McDonoghville Cemetery, 520 Hancock Street, Gretna, LA 70053.
