Sandra “Sandy” Newman Longley entered eternal rest on December 28, 2024, at the age of 82 after a fulfilling life dedicated to her family and her career as a teacher. Sandy grew up and resided in Port Sulphur until Hurricane Katrina in 2005, then relocated to Thibodaux, LA for 20 years and most recently moved to Prairieville, LA. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Our Lady of Holy Cross College and her Master of Education degree from the University of New Orleans. She was preceded in death by her parents, the late Asa Newman and the late Alma Comeaux Newman, and son-in-law, Eric Paul Hansen. Loving wife of Walter “Bobby” Robert Longley for 61 years. Loving mother to her five children: Renee L. Hansen (late Eric), Tom (Penny), Jimmy, Cathy Sutherland (Hugh), and Gary (Angela). Adoring grandmother to Lauren and Sydney Hansen, Madison and Elizabeth Longley, Megan and Dylan Longley, Kaleigh and Michael Gornak, and Sullivan and Madelyn Longley. Great grandmother to Mason, Leyah, JD, Johnny, Marie, and Mino. Loving sister of Virginia Leferve and Nancy Parr (George). Sandy’s hobbies included many activities, including reading, traveling, playing bridge, and watching Turner Classic movies (if there weren’t any good football games on to watch). She also enjoyed hosting family gatherings. As a teacher, she was known for her infectious enthusiasm in the classroom and her unwavering support for her students. She taught in Plaquemines Parish school system until her retirement as a librarian in 2005. She was a dedicated Catholic and member of St. Patrick’s Church, where she played the organ for over 40 years. Sandy was a woman of hilarious wit, sharp intellect, and profound kindness. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished. We were truly blessed to have shared so many loving years with her. We would like to thank her niece, Elaine Longley Alleman and all the staff at St. Joseph Hospice for their loving care and devotion to her and our family during this difficult time. Family and friends attended the funeral services on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 8968 LA-23, Belle Chasse, LA. Interment followed at St. Patrick Cemetery in Port Sulphur, LA. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Joseph Hospice at www.stjoefdn.org.
